Gwendowlyn S. Knapp, Ph.D., is a professor of biology at Illinois College where she teaches courses in microbiology, immunology and virology. She earned a B.S. in molecular biology and human genetics from Purdue University and a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Texas A&M University. Her doctoral work focused on protein-protein interactions of the LysR-type transcriptional regulators.

She was a NRSA postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Kathleen McDonough, Ph.D., where she studied gene expression in Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Her current research involves undergraduate students surveying the environment for antibiotic resistance and identifying microorganisms that could make novel antimicrobials.
